The Squarespace Review 2020: Our honest take

We had the chance to review Squarespace, and we must say, it really has quite a lot to offer. This New York-based company developed a website building platform that is unique and efficient. Squarespace allows you to build and host your website in one designated service.

The software is intuitive and even has template options as well as drag and drop features to simplify your process. The company was founded in 2004 by Anthony Casalena. Anthony created the software initially as a blog-hosting platform.

The company has continued to grow and gain popularity as it is discovered and tested. There are continual improvements and integrations added to enhance the value of the service and to draw in new customers.

Ease of Use

If you’re looking for something that is ultimately user-friendly, you will find that with Squarespace. We don’t just say that to boost the company. This is an honest and open Squarespace review. What makes Squarespace easy to use?

Squarespace is not necessarily the easiest of all website builders but it is still very easy to use when you get used to the differences. However, on a side note, Squarespace actually does not promote ease of use as one of their features or qualities that sets it apart.

Here are a few aspects and then we will dig deeper into each of these:

  • Drag and drop
  • Templates
  • No coding required
  • Web host included
  • Intuitive
  • Wholly customizable

Now, let’s break it down.

Drag and Drop

This is not some basic setup that won’t let you actually do what you want. In our Squarespace Review it has a drag and drop feature that is both intuitive and simple. The drag is primarily in sections. It may take a bit of practice to try to get used to.

The drag and drop is not a free-for-all where you can just drag and move anywhere. Instead, you drop into your desired section or block and you can edit or manipulate your drop from there.

There are a ton of templates available. The templates are modern and stylish and can fit just about any need. Whether you are looking to establish a restaurant menu or you have a donation affiliation, there is a template available for you.

The nice thing about the templates is you don’t have to fight with formatting. The template tool is interactive and runs almost like a “wizard” tool that you can fully customize and format. We will discuss the templates in greater detail in another section.

No Coding Required/Web Host Included

These easy features are two-for-one. In many website building software choices, you build the site and then you code it to a host. Squarespace eliminates the middleman. Squarespace lets you build the site and also acts as a web host as part of your package.

This means no strenuous or time-consuming coding between the two different platforms or tools.

Intuitive/Wholly Customizable

The intuitive feature speaks for itself when you read the other features of Squarespace. Here’s the really catchy part of the intuitive nature of the software. This software learns your general techniques and functions and then gives you options based on those.

It does not limit you to your routine habits but rather tries to gauge what you want to simplify your process. Another intuitive feature is the software’s ability to edit for viewing and SEO compatibility. We will get into SEO a bit later in the Squarespace Review.

What you need to know is the style editor works throughout your building with options unique to your formatting. The software also provides you smart and innovative options that capture the best view for the page you are building.

We combined these 2 features because, despite the intuitive nature, you can still customize your building. The intuition of the software does not restrict you from making changes and building your site how you want to.

Templates / Premade Layout Libraries

We touched on the setup of the templates in ease of use. Now, we’re going to dive into their depths and see what they are truly all about. The templates, as we mentioned, run much like a wizard tool would operate.

The templates walk you through a series of steps to set up the information in a template. One of the most noteworthy templates is a restaurant menu. The restaurant menu template has the formatting in place. You walk through each piece and it formats from head to toe.

You can add to sections and reorganize sections but on the upside, you don’t have to fight with formatting tools to get it to look just right.

Squarespace offers a vast library of premade layouts and templates. You simply choose your style and move from there to build your page.

You can see a brief view of many styles and templates by visiting the Squarespace website. You can browse particular categories, scroll through popular options, and make a starting selection all in one simple location.

The template feature of Squarespace is probably one of the best features that it has to offer. This is what draws people to Squarespace and sets it apart or above other web-building software programs.

The templates are simple. Each one includes instructions for use. And you will never feel like you don’t have options. The number of design templates available is significant.

In our Squarespace Review it seems that Squarespace seemingly understands what SEO needs and requires. If you want to pop up on that first page of Google search links, Squarespace is designed to help make that happen.

All of Squarespace’s pages, designs, and templates are designed to help you put your SEO skills to use. Everything is specifically designed to integrate the best SEO practices that are known. From meta descriptions to keywords, this software gets it

Additionally, Squarespace has support pages available for all users that walk you through SEO practices. It takes you through important SEO details to inform you and help you through the process.

We’ve talked about the fun features and the noteworthy tabs that every web builder is looking for in a platform. But we need to discuss overall performance of Squarespace.

You know by now the software is easy to use and it has a lot of valuable tools that will make your job much easier. But there are still so many things to cover.

How do you know if Squarespace is good for your web page?

Here are several optimal uses for Squarespace:

  • Blogging
  • Mobile-friendly and app use
  • Friendly views, easy on the eyes
  • Integrate membership ability
  • Build menus
  • Incorporate donations
  • Add audio player
  • Publish podcasts
  • Build forms

These are just a few basic uses that Squarespace has to offer to give you an idea of the performance functions.

In addition to these uses and features, you can also rely on Squarespace for things that are more important in the background.

You don’t have to deal with ads while you’re building. Every plan you purchase is ad-free.

You can edit your web design in any language but the interface only uses 6 languages. While doing our Squarespace Review it is not yet functional for websites that offer language translation to various languages. It is not ideal for this use.

Overall navigation can become challenging because it is simplified. It’s nice to have simplified navigation but at the same time, it can hold you back. The pros that like to work in various places at once may feel like Squarespace is not quite up to par on that level.

You can check visitor statistics directly through Squarespace and don’t have to invest in an outside analytic service to do so. The stats are right there and available to you at any time. You can also set up forms for contacting and newsletters in a simple and straightforward process.

On a final performance note, Squarespace offers password protection features, the ability to add HTML code, unlimited storage space, and oodles of support functions. The downside is there is no backup when you use Squarespace. You can export your data to a separate backup function but so far, you won’t have that direct capability through this software.

Squarespace is intuitive enough to help you optimize your design and simplify your processes. For instance, when you are building your design and adjust a font, the system adjusts all fonts in that block to make them proportional.

Overall, you want the functionality to integrate with third-party so you can access additional features and options you may want to incorporate.

Squarespace has an extensive integration ability but compared to other web builder software options, it is slightly lacking. We can only assume that Squarespace will continue to build and add integration. Keep in mind that this platform is growing and expanding its services and functionality.

One other thing to point out about the integration options is you have to pay even more to use these options. If you want the ability to integrate, be prepared to pay for one of the more expensive plan options. We will get deeper into cost here in a later section.

While testing out in our Squarespace Review it does have integration for many of the most popular tools. Amazon, Apple Pay, and Instagram are all part of the list of relatable integration compatibility. Let us also mention that Squarespace has E-Commerce functionality available at a cost as well.

Here are some of the 3rd party integration companies available:

  • Amazon
  • Instagram
  • Apple Pay
  • Appointment Scheduling
  • Flickr
  • SoundCloud
  • PayPal
  • 500px
  • Google & Adobe Fonts
  • Unsplash
  • Google ads
  • Pinterest
  • Square
  • Stripe
  • FedEx, UPS, USPS
  • OpenTable

These are just a few from various categories. There is an extensive list of official integrations available for perusal on Squarespace’s website.

Squarespace is one of the more expensive website building software programs available. They do not have a free option at your disposal. However, they do offer a range of plans and prices so you can pinpoint what you need and purchase accordingly.

Squarespace has 4 basic pricing options. They each have their own features and capabilities.

With each plan, you can choose to pay annually or monthly. If you pay annually, you can save yourself a few dollars. Each plan offers its own functions and obviously, the features build as you add the higher plans.

Customer Support

Customer support is another of Squarespace’s top features we loved in our Squarespace Review. The employees on the customer support team go out of their way to help you, including creating screencasts for instructional purposes when needed.

Squarespace has a chat support feature that comes in quite handy. There is no long phone hold, you can simply chat in and talk to something almost immediately about your issues. The support team will stay with you until your problem is satisfactorily handled.

The support team is always friendly and clearly there to serve you with a positive attitude.

In addition to being able to contact the support team, you have extensive additional information available at your fingertips.

Squarespace offers extensive help material to walk you through nearly every aspect of using the space. You can see their most popular guides on their support page. This list gives you guides like “Commerce FAQ”, “Switching templates”, “and “Starting with Squarespace FAQ”. There are several more there as well.

From there, you can move on to a selection of topics that are broken out by category. The categories include:

  • Getting Started
  • Account
  • Billing
  • Analytics
  • Commerce Domains
  • Mobile
  • Integration and Customizations
  • Technical Issues
  • Privacy & Security
  • Templates
  • Tips
  • SEO

This is just to name a few. The variety of topics is epic and they are well-organized and easy to sort through. It’s like Squarespace literally thought of every little thing. They then put together guides and sources and made it easy for you to find and access.

If you feel like this just isn’t quite enough, Squarespace has additional features available to you as well. You can explore a community forum that appeals to a community of users. These topics are generally more advanced and relate to practiced parties that have been working in the space.

One more – Squarespace also offers a series of interactive webinars. These webinars go through basics and are led with experts from within Squarespace that know their stuff and can walk you through every little detail.

As you can see, Squarespace offers an extensive variety of support tools to help you get through every little thing.

Squarespace Review Summary

Overall, Squarespace gets a high rating from our review. While Squarespace is still developing, it has a lot of valuable features to offer. It’s clear that Squarespace wants to be amongst the best and they are still finding their way to the top.

It is also clear that Squarespace cares about what their consumers want and they continue to develop changes to improve their offerings. Their price is slightly high for what they offer compared to other platforms such as WordPress and Wix.

At the same time, Squarespace goes above and beyond some of what their competitors offer in things like templates, design, and simplicity. The intuitive capabilities of Squarespace make your designing efforts simple and straightforward.

We believe that Squarespace earns a high rating. They have a great reputation and so many irrefutable characteristics that make the company stand out in comparison to their competitors.

In our books, Squarespace is worth the try. They have so much to offer and the platform is so easy to use. Aside from that knowledge, the functionality is great. Despite the areas where they don’t measure up, they show their worth in other areas. If you’re still on the fence about whether or not it’s worth it, consider that Squarespace does offer a free trial for you to give them a try.
